Limericks can be a chore
if you find standard meter a bore,
but they're Irish as heck
and a pain in the neck
only to those on the Liverpool shore
So, nine syllables in the first line.
Or eight, if you haven't the time.
Um, maybe it's seven?
Or five? Or eleven?
uh . . . whatever you do will be fine.
If you hear limericks all of the time
and wonder who to blame for the rhyme?
Well, it was Guinness, in contest,
Who said "The Limerick that rhymes best,
will be used as our marketing line."
and the winning limerick was . . .
A wonderful bird is the Pellican,
His beak can hold more than his bellican,
He can hold in his beak
Enough food for a week
and I'm damned if I know how the hellican.
