This early evening open mic is held the first four thursdays of each month (those rare 5th thursdays are an anthema!!) at Espresso Garden & Cafe in San Jose. This is a popular open mic that is necessarily strict about its its sign-up (out of a jar, you pick your spot as your name is pulled) and performance (10 min/2 songs each - if you're not present when called, you get bumped to the end of the night) rules. However, if your name is in the jar and you don't get a spot, they'll give you a rain check guaranteeing you a spot for the next open mic night. This is a specifically musical and accoustic open mic (no spoken word or comedy), they have a piano available for you and kids are welcome, so you might want to leave any material that could leave little ears burning for another event.
