On Telegraph, very close the Berkeley campus is Blake's. The fish & chips are good, and the black-box-theatre-style music venue is downstairs. This open mic event is called "The Songwriter's Symposium" (as I said, it's v.near the campus) and is one of only three open mics I know of where they record the evening and can offer you a CD of your performance at the end of the night (the others are the canvas in the city and HRS in Benicia). These folks seem pretty serious about helping songwriters and creating a community of writers, which is awesome. Admission for musicians is $2, everyone else is $1 before 9pm & $3 afterwards.
