AECHT SCHLENKERLA RAUCHBIER
(SMOKED BEER)
Yes, this is a German beer, but it's unique among German beers. While travelling the world last year, a U.S. soldier friend of mine told me about a brewery in Germany that makes something called "Smoked beer." The story I was told was that the brewery caught on fire some 800 years ago and the recued kegs of beer tasted so good they purposefully began treating their kegs with smoke. I made a point of stopping by to taste and was rewarded with a beer flavor almost too strange to describe, but so enjoyable that even my non-beer-drinking wife ordered herself a pint. Strangely enough, I've since discovered their smoked hops are for sale for those who might want to attempt their own batch of "smoked beer."
