GERMAN BEER Yes, German beer. Any German beer. For that matter, Austria and the Czech republic have quite a few respectable beers, but nothing can compare to German beer in general and that's due to the German Beer Purity Laws. These laws make it illegal to brew beer with anything other than water, grain, hops and yeast. It's a beautiful thing. German beer is the most consistent drink in the world. It's the lightest, most flavorful beer possible, typically served in giant liter-sized clay or glass mugs at very reasonable prices. The only reason I haven't listed a German beer as the best beer in the world is because I can't decide which one deserves the distinction over its bretheren. One piece of advice I can offer is to seek out a monestary where they brew their own beer. The brewing tradition there will undoubtedly be hundreds of years old, the beer will be unpasturized and usually it will be served directly out of huge wooden barrels. I have consumed far more than my fair share of German beer and have NEVER woken with any noticeable aftereffects. That in itself is something of note for those of us who like our beer. |
